Ongoing DFO Nonsense – Salmon Report

Ongoing DFO Nonsense – Salmon Report

Did I get out of the wrong side of the bed his morning? It seems as if generically we have been taught to say only good things about those who get paid very significant wages to manage a resource that belongs to all of us.

The good news is that in spite of drift nets both aboriginal and commercial gillnets doing everything they can to catch as many salmon and steelehad as possible, it seems that the goal was to extinguish the gift to sport fisherman of allowing then a generous 4 per day catch of sockeye salmon, good luck with that many nets in the river. I know a lot of good people work in the DFO and this is not aimed at you as I am sure you are as frustrated with your bosses as we are. He that has the power to give also seems to like to take it away again. (DFO Administration)

Next issue, we just saw one of the largest pink salmon runs in the Skeena in decades, only to watch them erase each others spawning efforts in the spawning beds, but still the DFO could not increase the allowable to 4 per day, even though more than 90% of sport fisherman release pinks anyways. Maybe these demigods that run the show think we did not want or deserve them anyways.

I recall a good Indian friend once saying that our goverment has an insurance plan to keep our eyes off of what they are doing by insuring Indians and non Indians are busy having racist battles over everything, land, water, fish, wildlife, and they do a damned good job of it, even to date. They have the guts to create laws that taketh away from non aboriginals, and with god like power give to the aboriginals, insuring race based hate will never go away.  I recall asking a DFO officer if we could keep the dead pinks tossed as unwanted salmon from nets that were targeting sockeye. Such a waste sending them  unspawned downriver just to rot. The answer was short and sweet, its illegal to keep fish caught in aboriginal nets, even the discarded ones.

Then the issue of Chinook Salmon, to say they have a conservation plan and only making it applicable to sport fisherman is a disgusting joke. The DFO simply close their eyes to what aboriginals are doing and exploit any charges they can make against non aboriginals all in the name of looking like they care. We watched in total dismay at Chinook salmon being harvested using fish ladders as a ways and means to catch chinook as opposed to help protect them. The DFO made sure they had both eyes and ears closed, and officers told us they have no jurasdiction to do anything about it. So what is this gong show? It certainly has nothing to do with conservation or insuring salmon will be around for the next generation.

Now where is the goverment of British Columbia, mandated with protecting steelhead stocks? They must be so deep in eating baloney sandwiches, they stopped caring about the decimation of the already endangered steelhead stocks. The NDP clearly do not give a damn about the sport fishery and to insure the truth is hidden in a closet they stopped counting, the last count was in 2010 and the sports fishing industry was worth 8.3 billion dollars. The question is are they managing the resource or insuring its destruction?

As of August 15, 2023 the Tyee Test Fishery (the main index of Skeena steelhead abundance) indicates:
• The Skeena aggregate run of steelhead will be low for 2023. The test fishery estimates the current run past Tyee is 5,593 steelhead with 55% of the steelhead run enumerated. This represent the 4th lowest year recorded in the last 69 years of monitoring.

Yet in social media they pretend to care. (note we removed the name of the persons comment, its a very appropriate comment.
