Fish Species:

Round Lake has been stocked with Kokanee from 2017 to 2020 (each year) but have yet to hear from anyone who has actually caught one. This lake has also been stocked with thousands of Rainbow Trout, as well as Coastal Cutthroat Trout, but the last year it was stocked with trout was 2016, unfortunately it also has northern pikeminnow (formerly known as squawfish) that could explain where the Kokanee are disappearing.

The history on this lake is very interesting with tests done as far back as 1952, stocking of the lake started in 1956-1987 with rainbow trout, a Biophysical Inventory/Assessment was done in 1975 and the following species of fish were found in the lake. Peamouth Chub, Northern Pikeminnow, Rainbow Trout, Redside Shiner, Burbot, Cutthroat Trout, Prickly Sculpin, Longnose Sucker.

The fish of most notable interest is Burbot also known as fresh water Ling Cod.

(If we find updated information we will update this page)  Also the numbers of trout are dropping off quite heavily since they stopped stocking trout in this lake since 2016

Maybe they need you the reader to call them and ask them to start stocking trout again, and maybe do something about the outbreak of northern pikeminnow.

LOCATION: Round Lake is about 7 kilometers east of Telkwa, B.C.  or 22km east of Smithers, including a few kilometers off the highway to where you will stop near the Round lake Hall.

We were out on this lake today (Apr 22nd 2021) it was a bitter cold wind so we did not stay long, but we did get one very nice Coastal Cutthroat Trout. The water was quite dirty but should clear up withing a week of this post.

It weighed 2.4lbs and 18 inches long. (click to view full size)

  1. Fished this year in July 2023 and caught 8 cutthroat trout (200 gm to 500 gm approx.) on east side of the lake in the weeded area. Stocking reports show last stock of cutthroat was in 2004 and these were diploid (sterile fish). Shouldn’t these fish be larger or are recent stocking reports inaccurate or missing?
