One hundred thousand salmon will face injury and death this summer by catch and release anglers. These salmon represent about 25 per cent of all remaining Atlantic salmon in North America.
The recent catch and release study (https://www.gov.nl.ca/ffa/wildlife/all-species/animals/inland-fish/atlantic-salmon/) showed significant risks to salmon stocks, despite its limitations. The study was done on a northern river in average water temperatures of 14 C with experienced anglers, using an observer to dip the released salmon in a rubber mesh net near the beach. The study recommended banning the catch and release of salmon above 18 C water temperatures.
